Hello Kathy,
Writing with the news, and the news is good. As illustrated by this CNN-grade graphic, we've raised almost $20,000. That's a baffling amount to me. It's hard to write sad songs with those kind of numbers.
So thank you, a big big thank you to all of you who have given, and to all of you who would give if you had the cash. In this case, I'm just as happy with that intention. This money has paid for the whole recording (the musicians, the production, the studio time) and almost the entire mix. That's huge. It means that I won't have to sell Avon products on the side this time while touring. Doing what I do can be a lonely process--I write alone, and I often travel and play shows alone--but I feel like this recording has been a hugely collaborative process. And you have been a vital part of getting this record done and allowing me and inspiring me to make it as good as I can possibly make it.
But if we want to finish the deal, and I think we should try to finish the deal, we need a a little more wampum (currency of the Lenni Lenape--a Native American people that lived in my home state of NJ). Here's what we have left to do:
1) Finish the Mix--we have a few songs still to mix, but she's close.
2) Master the Record--a mysterious process that ensures that the songs are the same volume, shapes the overall eq of the sound, gets all the fades and spaces between songs right and just generally makes everything sound more full and present.
3) Design the Artwork and Booklet--I'll be working with my friend Michael Fusco again. He did my last 3 records, and he knows how to make things look really good.
4) Print and ship the CDS--fairly self explanatory.
5) Print and ship the Vinyl--yes, we're going to make actual old school records of this one, the kind that require a needle and turntable to hear them.
So the lion's share is done, and you've allowed it to get done.
Still there's about 1/3 left to do and pay for. And if we're going to say that this was an "Entirely Fan-Funded Record" (and wouldn't that be a sweet kick in the fat tail of "the man" to say that?), we need just over $10,000 more. That sounds like a lot. But there are a lot of you out there. We've gotten most of the $20,000 through donations of just $25 (which gets you one of the first copies of the new cd signed and shipped by me) and $50 (which gets you the cd and a membership card that I make entitling you to 2 free tickets to a show of your choice and backstage passes).
We've also gotten some of it in bigger chunks (for an over-the-phone serenade, a song written for your newborn, a private concert, etc.). See the whole list of DB Gifts.
So if you are able to give and you want to give but just haven't gotten around to it, then consider clicking here now. It only takes a second, you donate by paypal (or check, if you'd like).
I believe we can do it. And it's going to feel and sound so good when we do.
I remain,
David
